Veronica Mars: Postgame Mortem

Dick: "By the way, I did a little research on pathetic sad sackery, and 'hot sister' is the recommended treatment."

Logan in the grip of a major depression was something to see. And I really enjoyed his involuntary adventures in babysitting.

Heather was essentially an eleven-year-old Veronica: clever, extremely verbal, nosy and in Logan's face, and she even wore Veronica's clothes so that we wouldn't miss the symbolism. Logan (again, involuntarily) unloaded his feelings about Veronica to Heather, and it obviously did him good. And little Heather gave him some excellent advice: if you really love Veronica, keep on trying. I liked the way Logan treated Heather. He'll certainly make a much better father than Aaron. Of course, anyone would be a better father than Aaron.

The elevator scene was absolutely priceless, a callback to that wonderful Veronica/Logan elevator scene in last season's "Donut Run." I also really enjoyed Dick's rather snide efforts to get Logan to snap out of it. Dick must have some redeeming qualities, or he wouldn't be Logan's friend. That's what I'm telling myself, anyway.

It sort of bothered me that Veronica was not in the grip of a major depression. But then they covered for it by reminding us that Veronica fights depression by keeping busy, which is consistent with what we've seen in the past. Like last season, when Duncan left: "My boyfriend just fled the country with his dead ex-girlfriend's baby. I need a project."

Dead Dean, dead coach. Now we have two unsolved murders. Are they related? Did the same person kill Dean O'Dell and Coach Berry, and for the same reason? That whole thing with Jeff Ratner, the creme brulee, the toothpaste alibi, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was too complicated for me. But it looks a lot like someone is trying to frame Josh for killing his father, just like someone is trying to frame Mindy for killing her husband. Similar, huh? Coincidence?

Bits and pieces:

— Wallace finally returned, but only briefly. So did Cliff. I love Cliff.

— Veronica corrupted Weevil two episodes in a row. She's going to get him in trouble with his parole officer. Although it was fun seeing Weevil the bad boy again, even marginally.

— Sheriff Lamb was gleeful when he arrested Veronica. Did Veronica really help Josh escape? No, I don't believe she'd do that... for Josh. I could see her doing it for Keith, though, or someone else that she loved.

— We were given three suspects who all appear to have alibis: the nasty b-ball player, Mason, who was with his girlfriend; Stoltz the gambling guy who was on a plane, and Arturo, the new head of the PCHers and former pizza guy mugger.

— When Veronica was alone on the cliffs with Josh and figuring out what happened to the car, I thought he would try to push her off the cliff. We were meant to think that, though. Another red herring.

— Dick married Melinda Button in Vegas, something he already regrets. If men took their wive's names, he'd be Dick Button.

— My second favorite scene in this episode (after the elevator) was a clean-shaven and spiffed up Logan handing his professor an apple and saying, "Miss me?"

Quotes:

Dick: "He doesn't normally look like this. Some chick ripped out his heart and stomped on it. Logan Echolls, Melinda and Heather Button."
Logan: "Which one's yours?"

Weevil: "I don't know what to say. Gang kids are usually quite punctual."

Heather: "Are you sick?"
Logan: "No."
Heather: "Do you want me to put highlights in your hair?"
Logan: "No."

Veronica: "Knowing that Dr. Landry and Mrs. O'Dell left the Grand in time to kill the Dean adds a whole new level of weirdness to attending Landry's profiling class."

Veronica: "I would have settled for 'I find her nosiness charming'."
Keith: "Man had good taste. Let's honor him by putting his killer behind bars." The letter that the Dean wrote for Veronica was just lovely.

The usual good VM episode,

Billie

Billie Doux loves good television and spends way too much time writing about it.

  1. Yes, Veronica dives into work to not think about her breakups but still, I wonder. Does Veronica truly love Logan? Veronica is behaving rather nasty this season. And again, we had the nasty Lamb getting a kick out of arresting Veronica. I love Lamb!
