Heroes: Company Man

Bennet: "How do I look?"
Claire: "Like my dad."

Fabulous. Best episode so far, in my opinion.

Bennet just sacrificed virtually everything for his beloved Claire Bear. And he won't remember any of it. Which just set him back up as a bad guy again, but one we can't help liking. Perfect.

In fact, this is the kind of episode I've been waiting for. We're finally getting past introduction and origin, and delving into dueling powers, ambiguous motivations, and major advances in the story. The strange siege at the Bennet house was just terrific, beginning to end. I particularly liked the way Bennet and Claire sent their thoughts to Matt, and how the three of them worked together so effectively to defuse Nuclear Ted.

I wasn't surprised that Nakamura was Bennet's boss; I could feel it coming. But I was surprised that Claude was Bennet's partner, and that they were together for seven years. (How did Claude survive that fall with all those bullets in him? He's a crafty guy; maybe he didn't fall. He faded out before he went completely over the side.) It was fitting somehow that Bennet let Claire go free in exactly the same place, and had the Haitian shoot him, as he shot Claude. I think it was Bennet's way of repenting.

Nuclear Ted is literally a loose cannon, completely unstable physically and emotionally, too outright dangerous to live. But the world is safe, because they're keeping him sedated at the paper company now. Hey. It worked so well with Sylar.

Bits and pieces:

-- We still don't know what the Company is doing. Now that the Haitian has taken off with Claire, it looks like Matt will become Bennet's next partner. I want Matt to find out what the hell is going on with the Company.

-- Nakamura as the big boss brings up questions about Hiro. Was he adopted by a Company Man just like Claire was? What about Hiro's sister? And Claire's brother Lyle? They've never explained Lyle.

-- The flashback where Nakamura gave Bennet the baby Claire was on the roof of the Deveaux building.

-- Bennet speaks Japanese. So does Claude. That's interesting. What does it say about the Company?

-- We only got a brief glimpse of a new female character, who works at Primatech. I thought it was Hannah, but it's not.

-- The "grandpa glasses" scene was touching and sweet, but made no sense. It should have taken place at Lenscrafters.

-- Seven years ago, Claude was hiding one of the Gifted ones from Bennet. Who was it?

-- Eric Roberts as one of the higher ups was fine. He's a distinctive and somewhat creepy actor, and that works.

-- Seeing the burned Claire reconstruct totally creeped me out. Excellent effect.

-- Very Cool Haitian Dude was once mute, but not any more. I really like him, and he deserves to be called by name. Can't they give him a good one?

Quotes:

Matt: "Don't, don't, don't!"
Ted: (sarcastically) "I'm not going to nuke the dog."

Bennet: "I'm comfortable with morally gray."

Nakamura: "Having children changes a man."
Bennet: "I can only imagine."

Matt: "Do you want revenge, or do you want the truth? You can't have both."

Claude: "I know we're serving the greater good, but the vivisection is starting to keep me up at night." Why would the Gifted ones work for the Company? I don't get it.

The ending actually made me cry, a first for Heroes. Four out of four stars,

Billie
