Lost Missing Pieces #5: Operation: Sleeper

Where it fits

Sometime between the events of "D.O.C" and "The Brig."

Recap

Jack is awoken during the night by Juliet. She tells him that since her arrival the camp folk (specifically Sawyer and Sayid), don't trust her. She then ominously informs Jack that they're right not to. She's still working for Ben. Her mission is to identify any pregnant women and report back to him, so he can take them away.

Jack insists that Juliet is one of them now. She'd wanted to escape in the submarine just as much as he had. Juliet admits to being caught up in the euphoria of possible freedom, but claims she was naive to believe that Ben would allow it. Jack tells her that it was Locke that blew up the submarine, not Ben (who'd been in a wheelchair at the time).

Jack asks why she's confiding in him now. Juliet explains that something changed the night she saw Sun's baby growing inside of her. In a months time both mother and baby would be dead. It was time for her to stop living Ben's dream and wake up.

Thoughts

I love the way the writers on this show seem to incorporate fan paranoia (and there's plenty of it) into the plot lines. After the episode "The Man From Tallahassee" there was much fan speculation that Locke hadn't in fact been responsible for blowing up the submarine. His clothes had been soaking wet, yet the submarine had been above surface level. Juliet's "Did he?" comment seems to add some weight to that particular theory.

And as usual, Jack is making promises he can't possibly hope to keep. He tells Juliet that he won't let anything happen her, and although she's appreciative of the comment, Juliet has seen enough to know that her protection isn't something that Jack can guarantee.

And again Juliet's dual nature comes to the fore. She freely confesses to working for Ben, yet claims it's wake up time. Is this the full truth? Or is it just another ploy to gain Jack's trust?

Quotes

Jack: "Locke blew up that submarine."
Juliet: "Did he?"

Jack: “I'm not going to let anything happen to you.”
Juliet: “Thank you, let me finish.”

Juliet: “They shouldn't trust me. I'm still working for him. For Ben.”

Jack: “So you're only here because he sent you here?”
Juliet: “Yeah.”

Jack: “Why are you telling me this now?”
Juliet: “I've been living Benjamin Linus's dream for three years. Three years. It's time to wake up.”
