Golden Globes 2014

Tonight, the Hollywood Foreign Press handed out its Golden Globe Awards. Both cinema and television are honored, so it’s the one time of year that pretty much every celebrity you can think of shows up in one place.

For those of you expecting sunbunny, hang on. This is ChrisB. sunbunny will be along very soon.

This show was not the usual award show. It was weird and shocking. Thankfully, we were blessed with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey hosting. Their opening monologue was one of the funniest things I have heard in a long time. I’ve said it before; they need to do every award show from now on.

What was amazing about this particular show is that quite a few of the awards were truly shocking. More than once, I shouted something inappropriate at my television screen. Some of the shocks were good, others were not.

To maintain the shock, Woody Allen was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille award and couldn’t be bothered to pick it up himself. Diane Keaton accepted it on his behalf and did a good job with her speech, until she got to that odd campfire song at the end. Weird.

As I said at the beginning, there was a lot about this show and the winners that was weird and shocking. Judge for yourself:

Best Motion Picture, Drama: 12 Years a Slave
Best Actress, Drama: Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
-- Wow. I did not expect this one at all.
Best Actor, Drama: Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
-- In my opinion, he was the weakest of the five nominated. I was astonished by this win.

Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy: American Hustle
Best Actress, Comedy/Musical: Amy Adams, American Hustle
-- A win I did not expect.
Best Actor, Comedy/Musical: Leonardo DiCaprio, Wolf of Wall Street

Best Animated Feature Film: Frozen
Best Foreign Language Film: The Great Beauty (Italy)
-- Hope the producer didn’t mind that the announcer mispronounced her name.

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture: Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture: Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club

Best Director for a Motion Picture: Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture: Spike Jonze, Her
Best Original Score: Alexander Ebert, All Is Lost
Best Original Song: "Ordinary Love," Mandela

Best TV Series, Drama: Breaking Bad
-- I watch and love all five shows that were nominated. But, Aaron Paul said it best, “Yeah, bitch!”
Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama: Robin Wright, House of Cards
-- Not the best choice, I’m afraid. She was good, but not great. Check out the Doux Review Twitter feed for the reaction of some of us at the announcement.
Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama: Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
-- This was a tough category, but I was thrilled that Cranston finally won.

Best TV Comedy: Brooklyn Nine-Nine
-- This one so shocked me, I actually dropped the f-bomb on Twitter. I almost never use that word. No really, I don’t.
Best Actress in a TV Series, Comedy: Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation
-- Well deserved win and her kiss was Bono was the stuff of genius.
Best Actor in a TV Series, Comedy: Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine-Nine
-- I nearly dropped my glass of wine. His speech did not convince me to watch his show, either.

Best TV Movie or Miniseries: Behind the Candelabra
-- Bummer. This show was awful.
Best Actress in a TV Miniseries or Movie: Elisabeth Moss, Top of the Lake
-- Well deserved. I loved this miniseries. Don’t miss it.
Best Actor in a TV Miniseries or Movie: Michael Douglas, Behind the Candelabra
-- I predicted his sweep back when I reviewed this show. Too bad, I was right.

Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture: Jacqueline Bisset, Dancing on the Edge
-- Worst acceptance speech of the night. She went on and on. She was so bad she was trending on Twitter.
Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture: Jon Voight, Ray Donovan
-- Appalling show, but to be fair, Voight was one of the reasons I stuck with it as long as I did. He wasn’t good enough to get me to the end of the season, however.

There you have it. I am now pleased to hand you over to sunbunny with her fashion critique. I hope some of you were able to join us on Twitter, even if you didn’t join in. We had a blast.

Dress Most Likely to Make Me Commit Murder

Kate Beckinsale is a beautiful woman and is generally one of the best dressed on the red carpet. This piece from Zuhair Murad might just be her best ever. I want it. Badly. I may have no place to wear it, but I don’t care. I’ll wear it to Target. Someone just give it to me!

Best Dressed Emma

Between Roberts, Thompson, Watson, and Stone, there was a surfeit of Emmas on the stage tonight. Winning Best Dressed Emma handily is American Horror Story’s Emma Roberts. Outshining everyone in a simple, black Lanvin number, the newly engaged Miss Roberts put even her aunt Julia to shame.

Best Bump

All the biggest surprises for me on the red carpet came in the form of baby bumps. Half of Hollywood is pregnant at the moment, but the Best Bump Award has to go to Kerry Washington, whose simple Balenciaga gown looked like it was personally selected for Ms. Washington by her character on Scandal, Olivia Pope.

Achievement in Jennifer Lawrence

Yes, Jennifer Lawrence gets her own award. Why? Because she’s Jennifer Lawrence. Her Dior gown is a little controversial (I really liked it) and her lipstick was just a shade too dark, but damn it, she’s Jennifer Lawrence. Plus she didn’t trip or tear her dress despite having to get up on stage three separate times and accepting an award for her work in American Hustle. That must be some kind of record for her.

Biggest Trend

It was dress like your character night at the Golden Globes. Besides the aforementioned Kerry Washington, Robin Wright and Amy Adams also picked dresses inspired by their characters, whether consciously or not. House of Cards’ Claire Underwood would be proud to be seen out and about in DC wearing Wright’s shimmery Reem Acra. Amy Adams’ 70s-inspired Valentino very well might've been stolen from the American Hustle set.

Achievement in Hair

Ignore the 1980s-ish prom dress. It’s all about Sandra Bullock’s ponytail. Retro with just the right amount of bouffant and ever so slightly unkempt, this ponytail will be studied in hair school a hundred years from now. And no, I’m absolutely not placing too much emphasis on a ponytail.

Best Makeup

Love or hate her Dolce & Gabbana gown, you can’t deny that Julia Roberts’ makeup was flawless. The perfect smoky eye combined with a neutral lip and a simple updo. Nice to see that the August: Osage County actress hasn’t lost her red carpet mojo.

The I’ve Never Heard of You but Congratulations on Looking Perfect Award

The I’ve Never Heard of You but Congratulations on Looking Perfect Award (known in the industry as the INHoYbCoLPA) is shared by two recipients this year. Lupita Nyong’o from 12 Years a Slave killed it in a tomato red Ralph Lauren dress complete with a cape Gwyneth Paltrow would be envious of. The Wolf of Wall Street’s Margo Robbie looked flawless in a jaw dropping Gucci gown accessorized with the most flawless skin I’ve ever seen. How? I mean that seriously. How? She gets bonus points for emerald green shoes that matched her dress’s embellishment.

Most Unforgivable Error

A retro-inspired, bright yellow ball gown designed by Zac Posen? Hell yes. On Lena Dunham? Hell no. I don’t know what her prejudice is against having dresses altered to fit her correctly but it must be a deep one. She makes the same mistake at every single awards show. The way the top of the bodice was cutting into her looked downright painful.

Worst Dressed

Another tie. This time between Zoe Saldana (whose risk taking on the red carpet has often landed her this less than coveted award) and Lizzy Caplan, whose crocheted confection just looked plain odd. Make that plain and odd.

  1. Great fashion stuff, as always, sunbunny. You and I have agreed to disagree on Jennifer Lawrence, but I'm with you on the rest.

Especially Zoe Saldana. I mean, really!

  2. LOL, ladies. What a terrific read.

She was so bad she was trending on Twitter. Too funny!

  3. Glad to see Amy Adams wears that sort of dress voluntarily - we felt her boobs deserved a credit to themselves in American Hustle!

  4. Juliette - Watching that movie, I honestly kept getting distracted by concern that she was about to fall out of her various dresses. I'm betting most of the costume department spent most of their budget on double sided tape.

  5. Colton Haynes clearly liked Jennifer Lawrence's dress:

  6. Yeah, another awards show, another slate of weird winners. I enjoy Brooklyn Nine-Nine quite a bit --- just watching reaction shots in the background can make me laugh pretty hard --- but I was shocked it and Andy Samberg won awards. For show, I would have gone with Parks and Recreation. But, I'm so delighted they decided to honor Amy Poehler. She rocks.

Also very glad to see Elizabeth Moss win for Top of the Lake. I watched it recently per Chris's recommendation, and it was really engaging. I found the assorted twists somewhat predictable, but the focus was more on the characters than the case itself, so it very much worked for me. Particularly Ms. Moss and Peter Mullen as Matt Mitcham. Very compelling performances.
