From Dusk till Dawn: Blood Runs Thick

"Souls are like popsicles."

A little bank robbing, a little hostage taking, a little ritualistic murder, a little potential kidnapping... this episode had everything.

There were a few different plots this time around, all focused on different sets of people. The Gecko Brothers had the flashbacks this time, so let's call them our A-plot.

My favorite parts had to be the flashbacks to the bank heist. It's very easy to just say that your characters are competent. It's another thing to actually be able to see them being competent. Seth's story about Richie and the rockstar's room was a great character moment. He was genuinely proud of his brother and what he's capable of, and was very happy to brag about him to anyone who would listen. Even captive bank tellers.

It's a shame that Richie went a bit off-script.

Okay, very off-script at times. Our mysterious woman is apparently a near constant presence, alternating between begging Richie to set her free and save her, and urging him to cut open anyone who catches his eye. She also seems to know things, like the fact that one of the tellers knew the vault code or where the release to the back door was.

Honestly, what's going on with Richie is absolutely my favorite part of the series so far. The way that he switched from laughing and joking with Seth to just completely stone faced once he looked away was chilling. Richie went right to bloodshed during the ambush at the bank, too. He didn't just shoot at the officers' legs either. He went for the chest and torso. The heart.

Seth, in comparison, was a little deer-in-the-headlights. He only fired at the very end, and he only targeted a car. He didn't shoot at anyone. Did he freeze, or was he just shocked at his brother's actions? I don't know. But it's a dynamic that I can't wait to watch going further.

Our B-plot serves as our introduction to the Fuller family: Jacob, and his children Kate and Scott. While it is always a pleasure to see Robert Patrick on my screen, I can't say the same for the kids. Scott is a nonentity at this point, but Kate started to grate on my nerves. It may have been the flirting via Bible verses.

I guess there is some intrigue over what actually happened to the deceased Mrs. Fuller. There was some kind of car accident that Jacob was a part of, but the fact that he not only pawned his wedding ring, but bought an RV to take his kids to Mexico without any warning definitely suggests that something happened there. I just don't know if I care. At least they were livened up by the presence of Carlos.

Who is apparently not human! Definitely a surprise compared to the movie, but a very exciting one. We finally got a good look at our vampires. Or at least vampire-adjacent creatures.

This is as good a place as any to admit that I really, really dislike the vampire effects. The idea is really cool. I love that it's something different than your normal vampires. The eyes look great. The fangs look like snake fangs. I just think that it looks weird and a little silly when they're in someone's neck. They're not scary or sexy, and that feels somewhat important for vampires.

Although vampire might be the wrong word to use here. After all, it seemed like Carlos consumed the Bible-quoting Kyle's soul instead of just his blood. It was cherry lime flavored! I am a little unclear on what Carlos' actual powers are. We saw him start to burn in the sun, but he didn't when he was pretending to be Kyle. Did that protect him somehow? Was he just in the shade? Does it really matter? Probably not. The important thing is that Carlos isn't human.

But why did he go through the trouble of taking over Kyle's identity? He told Seth that he was working on getting him and Richie to Mexico. Was it related to that somehow? I just can't see how keeping the Fuller family together would play into that.

This brings us to our C-plot with Freddie. There was no way that he was just going to go home and spend time with his family after Earl's murder. We didn't spend a ton of time with him, but he has Richie's ritual knife now. The eye design continues to be really cool... although maybe slightly less cool when it's drawn in dead dog blood.

I am curious about this cartel killer that Freddie has been hunting, though. Was Richie been killing people while his brother was in jail, or was it the person that he won the knife off of? Unclear. I'm sure that we'll find out, though.

Random Thoughts

Richie is the older brother. Huh. For some reason, I had assumed that he was the younger one.

Freddie's bloody hand was the one with his wedding ring. That adds another fun detail to my family/duty discussion last time.

Madison Davenport (Katie) was actually 17 at the time. Brandon Soo Hoo (Scott) was 18, so he was a bit older than his character. Either way, always appreciate actual teenagers being cast to play them.

I did love the pink bunny phone case, but wouldn't the cottontail just tear off by the third day of actual use?
