Billie's Best of 2014, Binge-Watch Edition

For me, this was the year of the catch-up binge watch. Coincidentally, all five of those binge-watching obsessions featured strong, interesting female leads. (And Derek Jacobi.) Even better, all five shows are still airing, so I get to be around for the finish.

Josie’s Best of 2014

2014 was, in many ways, a flat circle. According to my Netflix viewing history, I spend too much time watching TV, I spent an awful lot of time re-watching old shows this year, including my beloved Twin Peaks (which I finally finished reviewing, just in time for the announcement that there is more to come). And then, suddenly, it was December, and I had very little to show for it. But this is what I’ve got:

Juliette's 2014 Year in Review

I’ve been mentally composing my review of the year at various points throughout the year itself. Which is pretty worrying, really. But more entertaining than thinking about property prices.

And here, at last, it is! I'm once again using some of Jess’s fabulous categories, even if Jess hasn’t used them herself this year (‘I wish I knew how to quit you’ is my particular favourite).

Chris's Best of 2014

Many of the characters I loved last year, I loved again this year. Raylan Givens, Sam and Dean Winchester, Rick Castle and Kate Beckett, Crane and Abbie, William Masters and Virginia Johnson, Philip and Elizabeth Jennings -- all thrilled me, made me laugh, and made me cry. But, with all due respect to those characters that I continue to care about, there were an inordinate amount of new characters that I fell in love with this year.

Mark's Best of 2014

It was the year of fire...fly still not being uncancelled, the year of destruction…of what little remained of many fan's faith in the writers of How I Met your Mother, the year we took back what was ours...before U2  could put another one of their crappy albums on it. It was the year of rebirth (The Comeback came back, Community lives online, and another visit is planned to Twin Peaks), the year of great sadness (Sara Lance!), the year of pain (Allison Argent!) and the year of joy (Joffrey!). It was a new age... where Homeland is good again. It was the end of history... and True Blood, How I Met Your Mother, Boardwalk Empire, Sons of Anarchy, White Collar, The Newsroom, Revolution, The Colbert Report, Suburgatory, Witches of East End, The Bridge, Californication, Warehouse 13, Psych and The Legend of Korra (boy, a lot of shows ended this year). It was the year everything changed...with online services dominating, anthology series becoming the norm and pretty much every late night talk show gets a new host (and all of them were, groan, white guys). The year was 2014. The place: Babylon 5 Doux Reviews.

J.D. Balthazar's Look Back at 2014 Movies

This was an interesting year for cinema.  For the most part things were good, but it was fascinating what turned out to be excellent, and what didn't live up to expectations.  There were a handful of films that I consider the best of the year, a few that were disappointing, and several that I'd recommend. To clarify, I tend to go to genre films so you probably won't find the movie that wins Best Picture on this list.

Sunbunny's Best of 2014

2014 was not my best year ever (don’t ask, seriously), but it was a really great year for the shows I love to watch. Find out what my made my ‘Best of’ this year!

Laure's Best of 2014

2014 is coming to a close, and this has been a strange year for me, televisionwise. I moved half-way across the country and forfeited having a T.V. in my room. So, instead of the typical 'Best Of' this year, I'm also going to include a quick outline of the survival guide that's worked for me should anyone ever find themselves in the dire situation of being without easy, unlimited access to a T.V.

Jess's 2014 Year in Review

When I initially started my standard “Year in Review” piece, I ended up with this huge list of categories and shows, covering everything from those I loved unabashedly, to those that let me down, to those I finally let go. It was just too much to wade through, no matter how much fun it is coming up with category titles. (New contenders for this year: Things that Make you Go Hmmm …, Adventures in Non-Fiction, and Darkness Falls.)

So, in the spirit of the season, I decided to instead focus this year’s look back on the shows that I most want to share with others. The ones I watched in 2014 that I really want to encourage you to seek out, whether they’ve come and gone or are still going strong. There are many other shows among my favorites from the year --- The Walking Dead remains my unhealthiest obsession --- but these are the shows that, at the end of the day, most inspired me to proselytize.
