Five (And More) TV Characters Who Were Meant to Die

Death comes for us all eventually. Unless you're a new character on a popular TV show and the producers take a shine to you and decide to keep you around, in which case Death is told to get lost and only come back when the actor asks for a pay bump or time off so they can make some movies.

Justified: The Promise

"We dug coal together."

Not what I expected. But that's okay.

Justified: Collateral

"Stories of outlaw legends, they ain't passed down by the families of the murdered."

Justified: Fugitive Number One

"It's beyond bad, chief. It's career-ending."

Another exceptional episode. Practically every scene was loaded with tension and edge-of-your-seat goodness. I kept thinking that violence would erupt at any moment. And it did.

Justified: Trust

"I'm just saying last time we tried something like this, we ended up with his underwear."

Does love conquer all, even among the criminal element?

Justified: Burned

Boyd: "I'm a bad man, Loretta. But Avery Markham is a real bad man."

Justified: Dark As a Dungeon

Raylan: "There is only the one thing. You."
Boyd: "You wanna lean in for a kiss?"

The previous episode's visit from Winona and Willa has finally pushed Raylan into action. He's planning to leave Harlan alive.

Justified: The Hunt

"You gotta give an animal a fair shake."

Let us take a pause in our narrative while our hero and villain resolve very important issues with their girlfriends, why don't we?

Justified: Alive Day

"Wonderful things can happen when you sow seeds of distrust in a garden of assholes."

Justified: Sounding

"Running is a mistake. That's how they find you."

Despite the constant references and even the actual carrying out of torture and accidental murder, this episode was a bit on the light side.

Justified: The Trash and the Snake

Raylan: "Spins this thing a whole other way."
Art: "Sheds a new light on an ever spreading circle of greed and evil and murder and mayhem."

Now we know the game plan.

Justified: Noblesse Oblige

"Have you seen Chinatown, Boyd?"

The strength of this series is how human the characters are. Good guys, bad guys, they all come across as real people.

Justified: Cash Game

"Could you ask him to bring back my car?"

The land deal crap is confusing me. So I'm going to talk about Ava first.

Justified: Fate's Right Hand

"I couldn't trust him any more."

I was hoping that they'd go for broke in Justified's final season. Perhaps I should be more careful what I wish for.

Justified: Restitution

"Is it true what they say about hard times showing you who your friends are?"

I haven't been all that happy with Justified this spring, but these last two episodes were an improvement and a return to form. And they just set up what could be a blow-out of a final season.

Justified: Starvation

Boyd: "Raylan Givens, I'm extending my hand to you. Why are you baring your teeth?"

Can this substandard season be saved by an episodefull of Raylan/Boyd bitter-banter, plus a bit of great comic relief from Dewey Crowe? Possibly. Depends on whether or not the finale hits the target, I suppose.

Justified: The Toll

"Why weren't you where you were supposed to be?"

Justified: Weight

Wendy: “There’s no cause for that, Marshal. Now, you’re just putting a couple of innocents in jeopardy acting out like this.”

Another apt title this week, as the weight of various choices and wrong turns is finally starting to press in on our characters, forcing them to confront their situations. For everyone except Raylan, that is. He still can’t recognize the danger of the path he’s on, and instead of seeing the “shape of things to come” warnings all around him, he just sees divine providence.

Justified: Wrong Roads

Dewey: “I told you we shouldna taken the highway!”

Well, the title pretty much says it all this week, eh? We’ve had a lot of different threads this season, with many, many characters struggling to get ahead, get themselves turned around, or to make a fresh start, but somehow they’ve all managed to end up on the wrong roads. Boyd. Ava. Dewey. The Florida Crowes. Even Raylan. Sadly, few of them seem to fully recognize it yet.
