Star Trek: Section 31

"It's going to be bumpy and bad."

In theory, Section 31 should have been a fun Star Trekian take on a spy flick. But sometimes theories can be wrong.

What If... 1872?

“Are you up for an adventure?”

A little revenge, a dash of history and a healthy serving of family dysfunction. What’s not to love?

Star Trek Discovery: Life, Itself

“I get it... mostly.”

As one of my favorite shows has so aptly stated, endings are hard. Bringing a season to a close is difficult enough. Creating emotional closure to a series is exponentially harder. This episode succeeded... mostly.

Star Trek Discovery: Lagrange Point

Let’s do this.

A Lagrange Point is when a smaller object is held in a particular position by the gravitational pull of two larger masses. Or, given the events of this episode, it could also be interpreted as the location between a rock and a hard place.

Star Trek Discovery: Labyrinths

“Can you at least tell me what the test was? Before the lights go out.”

Socrates is believed to have said that to “know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.” If so, then it would seem that Michael wasn’t the only one being tested.

Star Trek Discovery: Erigah

“Do not equate a desire for understanding with a lack of nerve.”

When is an Erigah not an Erigah? This week the hunt for the Progenitors’s tech takes a backseat to political drama with the Breen.

Star Trek Discovery: Whistlespeak

“Let’s go meet the gods together.”

I don’t consider myself unusually slow, but it has taken me an embarrassingly long time to realize that this season is going to be a spiritual exploration for the entire crew of the Discovery and not just for Culber.

Star Trek Discovery: Mirrors

“The light of hope shines through even the darkest nights.”

This episode, like this season, and the show at large revolves around the idea that we always have the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and make better choices. Both Michael and Book have each been down this is road. Now they’re determined to show others the way.

Star Trek Discovery: Face the Strange

“It will be a long road. Just don’t give up.”

It seems it is the way of any show lucky enough to knowingly go into their final season to find a way to revisit the high and lowlights of their characters’ journey. Discovery is no different. Lucky for me, this week’s retrospective also offered a side order of character development.

What If... Hela Found the Ten Rings?

"Without a fight, I’m no one."

My understanding is that the What If...? comic book series was an excuse to go on some really outrageous tangents from Marvel’s official canon. This episode does not. Instead, it leans heavily on variations on a theme.

Movie Review: Dune, Part Two

“You are not prepared for what is to come.”

After meeting the insanely high bar most Dune fans had set for Denis Villeneuve in Dune, Part One, the question remained of whether he could stick the landing. We needn't have worried.

What if... Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?

“I don’t do sequels… Normally.”

The one where Peggy Carter makes her second season debut.

Echo: Season One Review

“We’re family. No matter what.”

I have so many THOUGHTS after watching Echo. Not the least of which is that Disney and Marvel did Echo a disservice by dumping all the episodes on a Tuesday right after the holidays. Especially since there’s so much to love about this show. That said, it is not without some glaring flaws.

Doux Top Twenty! Number 16: Arrow

Arrow is number 16 in Doux Reviews’ top twenty hitting shows.

Arrow ran from 2012 to 2020 and spawned a Berlanti-verse of spinoffs with lots of crossovers (that I still haven't finished updating). Doux Reviews was fortunate to have Samantha M. Quinn on board to review the first five seasons, and Shari willing to take over for the final three (with a little help from Mallena in the transition).

Loki: Science/Fiction

“We’re all writing our own stories now.”

The episode picks up where we left off. The Temporal Loom has exploded and Loki is once again unstuck from time. Though this time there appears to be more method to the madness…

Shadowhunters: By the Light of Dawn

“Please let this work.”

Well, they certainly ended the mid-season with a bang. Trust was the name of the game this week. Yet, we're the ones left wondering who to believe.

Shadowhunters: Bound by Blood

“You always told me to read the fine print. Well, I guess now I know why.”

This week on Shadowhunters Behaving Badly... Clary is punished for forgetting about Madzie, Izzy and Raphael conflate addiction with love, and once again Alec loses his temper with just about everyone.

The Flash: A New World, Part 4: Finale

“Any last words?”

In the beginning, there was Barry Allen. A young man on a quest to explain the impossible in the hope of exonerating his father of his mother’s murder. Now he is a superhero, respected leader, and soon-to-be-father. The end of a series should be a commentary on our protagonist’s journey. Yet this was less about what’s changed than how it remained the same.

The Flash: A New World, Part 3: Changes

“There’s being alive and there’s what makes life worth living.”

It’s been said many times that there’s a fine line between love and hate. The Negative Speed Force is intent on proving that it’s true.

The Flash: A New World, Part 2: The Blues

“Is there a problem?”

Last week pitted Barry against the Negative Speed Force. This week should have started with a giant “Meanwhile...” in the corner. However, the opportunity to spotlight another character or provide more context around our Big Bad’s master plan was wasted. Making this feel more like a bunch of side quests than the next well-crafted step towards the series finale.
