So here we are. There's a lot of Trek, isn't there? I haven't even attempted to address the book situation. There are so many Star Trek novels (here's a link to the Wikipedia page) that it's absolutely insane. None are considered canon.

ReplyDeletePhew that's a lot of Star Trek. Fun fact: my mom went to school with one of Gene Roddenberry's kids. That's literally all I have to contribute to this discussion, having only seen a few episodes of Next Gen.

ReplyDeleteSunbunny, yeah. There's a lot. This piece came about because I wanted to create a list that I could add as a related link to all of the different Trek series, like our MCU list. But when I was putting it together, it kind of got long. :)
Speaking of forgetting about Star Trek V, the novel 'The Autobiography of James T. Kirk' actually tried to write it out of canon. They used the law of parallel planetary development that made an alien Roman Empire show up in 'Bread and Circuses', and said that Star Trek V was a movie made on a planet that developed similarly. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy visited the planet and watched the movie. Like everyone else, of course, they hated it.

ReplyDeleteBut there's one that deserves to be added, and to be reviewed. Technically The Orville isn't StarTrek, but it's so much founded on StarTrek, especially The Next Generation, and so very much in tune with the Star Trek ethos of that period in a way that isn't true of much of the later variations that it merits a place here.

Gerontius, thank you for the suggestion. I know a lot of people love The Orville. I'm not sure why I don't, but it's always rubbed me the wrong way.
ReplyDeleteIt's popular to rag on Gene Roddenberry, and there's no doubt he was imperfect (Nomad would not have approved), but here's a little story that shows what kind of individual comes up with an idea like Star Trek.
