Angel: Carpe Noctem

Cordelia: "She's got the big puppy love. I mean, who wouldn't? You're handsome and brave, and heroic, emotionally stunted, erratic, prone to turning evil, and let's face it, a eunuch."

Apparently, the Angel writers have been reading their Anne Rice (Tale of the Body Thief). David Boreanaz can definitely do comedy. It must be a relief after doing dour so much of the time.

There was fun to be had here. I especially liked Roscoe assuming Angel was gay and telling Wesley that they had to leave their physical relationship in the past. And I got a charge out of Angel and Lilah tearing each other's clothes off. At least Cordelia, Wesley and Gunn actually noticed that Angel doesn't usually eat breakfast burritos and showed up in time to save the day. Or the noctem.

So Lilah is attracted to Angel. Not a surprise, but why did she give him those forged papers? Are they making her into another Wolfram & Hart turncoat like Lindsey? Daniel Dae Kim's character brought up a good point: how does Angel function without a social security number and a last name? Is this new lawyer supposed to be trying to bring Angel down like Ness brought down Capone, i.e., with legalities, since they can't seem to get him any other way?

Bits and pieces:

— Still with the leather pants. At least they finally resolved the Buffy issue.

— I liked Fred's comments about the models in the magazine being too skinny and that she'd been in a cave for five years, what was their excuse.

— So when did Angel get into sci-fi movies? Isn't he the "quiet, stay at home, sulky one"? And for that matter, where were the visions? What happened to helping people?

— Marcus Roscoe was played by Rance Howard, Ron Howard's father and the same guy who played Sheridan's father in Babylon 5. Plus the whole possession thing looked a lot like Kosh and Lyta. Okay, pointless B5 digression over.

Quotes:

Lilah: "You son of a bitch!"
Angel: "I'm sorry. It just felt like the thing to do. (Lilah holds up a cross to ward him off) Whoah. What are you, born again all of a sudden?"

Cordelia: "If Julia Roberts ever makes a realistic movie about being an escort, I think it should be called pretty skanky woman."

Fred: "It's like something out of Fitzgerald. The man who can have everything but love." Good quote. I like Fred.

Good episode. Very clever. Three out of four stakes,

Billie Doux reviewed all of Buffy and Angel, so she knows the plural of apocalypse.

  3. I think that Lilah undercutting Gavin is just for the sake of undercutting Gavin. He's cutting in on her turf.

  4. So when did Angel get into sci-fi movies?

Was this addressed in “Are You Now or Have You Ever Been”? Did he talk about enjoying planetariums (planetaria?) then, or movies, too?

  5. I didn't get why Roscoe stuck around the hotel with the others, wouldn't be smarter to just scoot?
