Mark's Best of 2025

Seasons greetings, faithful readers, and welcome to what could loosely be called my best of 2025.

Superman (2025)

"People were going to die!"

This is a different kind of Superman movie. I spent the entire drive home trying to figure out how I felt about it, specifically if I could point out any negatives I had with the film. Besides a couple of minor quibbles, which I will talk about later, I couldn't think of anything bad to say. Just a whole lot of good.

Mini Comic Reviews: July, 2025

This month, to celebrate the release of James Gunn's Superman, I'll be taking a look at new and classic adventures from the legendary Man of Steel.

Mini Comic Reviews: February, 2025

This month I'll be taking a look at Superman For All Seasons, Ryan North's Fantastic Four, Black Science, Richard Stark's Parker, and The New Gods.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)

“Destroy. Destroy Superman now!”

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. The same could easily be said of Superman IV.

Five Classic Comic Book Runs

Five memorable comic book runs by some of the industry's best writers and artists starring some of the world's greatest superheroes.

Five Superhero Films that Evolved the Genre

Superhero movies have been around for a long time. Superman's first film appearance was in 1941, and Batman's in 1943. Yet for a majority of its existence, the superhero film has been regarded as pulpy, nonsensical and for kids, while comic fans are quick to point out that in the century-long history of the superhero, many, many stories of every kind of genre have been told.

The Movie Industry Might Be Broken...

But I don't think it is going anywhere.

Articles and opinions are being circulated around the internet with alarming speed about how the movie industry is in trouble, with claims that if the next blockbuster (specifically Pacific Rim, which is an original property) isn't a massive success, we'll be doomed to nothing but reboots, remakes, adaptations, and sequels until the eventual and inevitable decline of the movie industry into nothing more than a century long blurb in the history books. I call bullshit.

Newsflash: Man of Steel Teaser(s)

Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's...a fisherman? Huh, can't say I was expecting that. It's been six years since Superman Returns failed to restart the franchise (I liked it, but can see why people had issues with it), so now Warner Bros. is having another go at bring the last son of Krypton back to the big screen with Man of Steel.

Superman: The Movie

This review includes spoilers.

"They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son."

This is going to be a big year for superhero movies. Joss Whedon has already assembled The Avengers (and smashed every box office record known to man). Spider-Man will try to be amazing and make us all forget the foul stench of Spider-Man 3. And the Dark Knight will rise to battle his most terrible foe yet: the curse of the disappointing threequel. So I figure now is as good a time as any to review some of my favourite superhero movies, starting with the granddaddy of them all: Superman: The Movie.
