24 is number 6 in the Doux Top Twenty. And this is the one show on the list that completely surprised me.
It’s not that 24 isn’t a great show; it is. The minute-by-minute as-it-happens format was groundbreaking when it aired (2001-2010), and I watched its entire run back then. But my reviews are relatively recent, and they’re season reviews as well.

Five TV Characters Who Vanished Without a Trace
by
Mark Greig
For the latest instalment of our new semi-regular feature, Doux Five, I'll be looking back at those TV characters who, for whatever reasons the writers couldn't be bothered to come up with, went and pulled a Lord Lucan on us. No wait, that reference isn't universal. Errr, a Richey Edwards? No, that is even more obscure, you idiot. An Amelia Earhart? Yeah, I'm going with that. Characters who pulled an Amelia Earhart on us.

"Tick tock, Mister Bauer. You're running out of time."
Jack was ready to give up the game. Unfortunately, the game wasn't ready to leave him be.

Larry: "The rules are what make us better."
Jack: "Not today."
Day 7 takes place entirely in Washington, DC. Early episodes centered around a "CIP device" that could, and did, penetrate the U.S.'s computer network firewall; later episodes followed a bio-weapon developed in Sangala as it was used in terrorist attacks in the DC area.

Jack: "If they want me back in Washington, they can come and get me."
24: Redemption is a TV movie that takes place between seasons six and seven of the main series. It doesn't actually have a title other than 24; I'm not sure how it acquired its subtitle. I saw it once when it aired in 2008 and didn't remember it well, but am happy to report that it was better than I expected. It features strong performances by Kiefer Sutherland and Robert Carlyle, and a predictable but still touching plot about child soldiers in the mythical African country of Sangala.

A streamlined villain, a more focused plot, and a relatively successful season.

Chase: "Today is not a good day for you to be needing a fix."
Day 3 isn't what I'd call bad, but it certainly suffers in comparison to the exciting wall-to-wall action and depth of emotion that dominated Day 2.

Tony: "To say this has been a long day would be a major understatement."
They really went for the gusto this time. Day 2's major plot point had a terrorist group called "Second Wave" setting off a nuke in Los Angeles, with the possibility of a couple of million casualties. The big surprise was that the nuke actually did go off – just not in Los Angeles.

Jack: "It's just been a really, really long day."
Back in November 2001, 24 came along with a brand new and compelling format for television action thrillers. Each season of 24 is a "day" consisting of 24 one-hour episodes, with the now iconic digital clock appearing periodically as events "take place in real time." This show came out before binge-watching took off, but its format makes it a perfect binge, if I do say so myself.

For eight seasons (2001-2010), 24 blew us away with its non-stop action and suspense in a real-time format, with each episode consisting of one hour, and a 24-episode season taking place in a single day. Kiefer Sutherland led the series as tough-as-nails counter terrorism agent Jack Bauer. The series was created and produced by the same team that gave us La Femme Nikita.
Billie Doux wrote season reviews for the original eight seasons, and she, Samantha M. Quinn and ChrisB wrote episode reviews for 24: Live Another Day.

24 Live Another Day: 9:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.
"If the U.S. goes to war with China, who do you think benefits?"
This was a bit of a hodgepodgy mess, which makes sense given the jumble of plots we have left to solve in this penultimate episode.

Adrian: “The truth is always best.”
Chloe: “What truth? The truth when you decide to tell it?”
As we reached the beginning of the end of this season, we watched relationships implode and ships explode. We also got a few reminders of past seasons, which made me consider how television has changed since this show’s first season.

This was a non-stop action packed episode with a bunch of great classic 24 twists and turns. Starting with one that I truly didn't see coming.

“Face it, son. You and I are the only chance they have.”
So often when we watch a television show or a movie, we know that the danger in which the hero finds himself is a plot device. Before the end of the hour, something will happen that will thwart the bad guy and the good guy will win. 24 is not a show that has ever played by the rules.

“I shouldn’t have done that. I just hate these people.”
When 24 was, in fact, twenty-four hours, there was always a subplot or two that felt like filler and, finally, didn’t have too much to add to the central story. Now that 24 is only twelve hours, I was hoping that these distractions from the main action would be kept to a minimum. So far, so good.

"Jack wants her, Jack needs her, Jack gets her."
As the season progresses, I keep coming back to the same question; how much does Fox want 24 back on the air?
