Juliette's Best of 2025

I am writing this through a fog of flu, so here’s hoping it all makes some kind of sense! As ever, my body has reached the end of the year and given up, and there are some nasty flu strains around this year. But the big news is that I am going part time at my main job next year, to be available for school runs and teacher training days, and to spend more time on writing and content creation, so with any luck I might finish next year with a tiny bit more energy!

Anyway, on to the Best of 2025…

Now that Strange New Worlds has ended for the season, I'm in the middle of a few things: still watching Big Sky but finding season two might be too much like season one; finally watching the later seasons of Call the Midwife, and feeling like the plotlines might be getting too repetitive.

Billie Doux: I just finished all four seasons of Ozark quickly... except the final seven episodes, which will arrive on Netflix at the end of April. Shows about organized crime tend to be all about guys, and I've realized that one reason why I find Ozark so compelling is...

This Week: But Evil First

I hate to admit it, but we can't review everything. So I thought it might be fun to get the Agents of Doux to talk about what they're watching this week. And if it is fun, maybe we'll do it every week.

Billie Doux: For me this week, it's all about Ozark. Don't you love it when you try something and it's really good, and there are multiple seasons to watch? I decided to give Ozark a try last week and I'm already in season three.

Juliette's Best of 2021

Another Plague Year draws to a close. Another year featuring severely disrupted cinema viewing but probably quite a lot of TV. Another weird year. But if they're all weird now, I guess that makes weird normal. However, I absolutely refuse to use the phrase "the new normal" because it's awful.

Star Trek: The Cage

"The Cage" is the 1965 pilot of the original Star Trek, our very first glimpse of Gene Roddenberry's now culturally ubiquitous vision of the future. This pilot starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike, Majel Barrett as second-in-command Number One, and Leonard Nimoy as alien officer Mr. Spock.

What's Star Trek Day? Apparently, it's a day when CBS All Access is promoting episodes and panels and all sorts of things. (It's also the day that the first Star Trek episode aired for the first time back in 1966.)

Not exactly a Newsflash

So... the final season of Game of Thrones begins on Sunday, April 14. I don't watch it, but even I am thinking it's been an awfully long time since the last season. Has it? It has, hasn't it?

IGN has explained how the timeline of the new Picard Star Trek series is going to work with the Next Gen movies and the J.J. Abrams movies. Essentially, it's not; there are going to be two universes. I'm a lifelong Star Trek fan (I hate the word 'trekkie') and even I'm confused.

Star Trek Short Treks: The Escape Artist

By nature I love brevity: Solid. I got a kick out of this one. 'Calypso' remains the best of the Short Treks, but this is probably the most satisfying.

There are a lot of different fandoms out there in the world with their own fervent adherents. And while we live in a glorious age of streaming and binge watching, which makes it easier than ever to jump into that cool show that everybody but you seems to be talking about, it remains undeniable that fan communities at some point reach what we might call 'gatekeeping critical mass'.

This year, I am taking the bold step of making up my own categories for my Year In Review. This
inevitably means they may be quite boring categories!

I keep detailed records of all the films I see at the cinema, but not of all the TV shows I watch, so there may be a tendency for more detail in the Film categories. I've also watched surprisingly little TV this year, comparatively speaking, but hey ho, quality over quantity!
